Nvidia just released a big update for Nvidia Shield that introduces support for Amazon Echo devices. Now you’ll be able to use Alexa to control your TV without using your Remote. Nvidia has also partnered with select retailers to hook you up with a free Amazon Echo Dot when you purchase an Nvidia Shield. Existing Shield owners are also eligible for a discount.
Partnership with Amazon
Nvidia Shield TV is one of the most popular Media Consoles in the world. It’s already famous for it’s Game Streaming technology, and now it’s becoming even better for media.
Nvidia is introducing support for Amazon Echo voice control to Nvidia Shield. Now you’ll be able to give your Shield voice commands to make navigation even easier.
In addition to Alexa voice support, Nvidia is also introducing Dolby Atmos passthrough support for Prime Video. Prime Video on Shield already supports 4K HDR visuals, and now you’ll also be able to enjoy spatial audio.
Setting up Alexa Support
To connect your Echo to your Shield, start by pairing it through the Amazon Alexa App on your mobile device. Next you’ll need to enable the Nvidia Shield Skill in the Alexa App. Just open the Alexa App and search for NVIDIA SHIELD TV. Select the skill and then press Enable. At this point you can finish the setup process by linking the Alexa App to your Nvidia Account.
Once the Alexa App is setup, you can give your Shield a wide range of voice commands. Examples would be:
- “Alexa, turn on SHIELD.”
- “Alexa, turn off SHIELD.”
Controlling the volume
- “Alexa, set volume to 80 percent on SHIELD.”
Opening entertainment apps
- “Alexa, open Prime Video (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, open HBO NOW (on SHIELD).”
Using media controls
- “Alexa, pause (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, play (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, next (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, previous (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, fast-forward ten minutes (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, go to settings (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, go home (on SHIELD).”
- “Alexa, go to control settings (on SHIELD).”
Through November 10th, 2018 new owners can purchase a Shield TV from Amazon or Best Buy and receive an Amazon Echo Dot (3rd Gen) for free. If you’re already an Nvidia Shield TV owner, you can receive a discount on an Echo Dot through Nvidia Rewards. If you’re not already a Nvidia Rewards member, you can sigh up here.
