Nvidia Dominates Game Streaming Market

Parsec has been collecting diagnostic information about the hardware used with their service. They recently released this information through their blog. It turns out that Game Streamers overwhelmingly prefer Nvidia hardware for their streaming systems. 

Nvidia is the most common GPU for both Consumers and Cloud Services

According to Parsec, a staggering 78% of hosting computers are powered by a Nvidia GPU. This might sound like an unusually high number, but it’s not when you consider that 72.8% of consumer GPU’s sold are from Nvidia (credit Jon Peddie Research). In addition to being preferred by Gamers for their own systems, Nvidia also powers most Cloud Servers.

You might think that most Game Streamers demand the absolute best quality for their streaming sessions. In fact, the GeForce GTX 1060 and GeForce GTX 970 are the most common GPU’s used for Game Streaming. The highly-coveted GeForce GTX 1080 only made it to #5 on Parsec’s most-used list. It appears that most Gamers prefer affordability over raw power. We can also see from this list that a significant number of Gamers are using an older generation of GPU.

Game Streamers largely have the reputation of chasing after Ultra High Quality Graphics. These numbers tell us that this may not be the case. It appears that Gamers care more about accessibility. Game Streaming allows you to play almost anywhere. All of the GPU’s that made it into Parsec’s top 5 are capable of powering 1080p/60fps gaming sessions.

Gamers prefer value over power for Cloud Gaming

The Nvidia Quadro M4000 is the fourth most-used GPU in Parsec’s list. This is one of the GPU’s powering Paperspace’s Cloud Service. Interestingly, the M4000 is the lowest powered GPU offered by Paperspace. They charge just 0.40 cents an hour to use it. It’s right on par with the GeForce GTX 1060 in terms of capability. This contradicts the perception that world has about Cloud Gamers (that they value gaming quality the most). It also suggests that Cloud Gamers might be misunderstood by the Cloud Service providers themselves.

When you visit a Cloud Provider’s website, you are likely to be greeted with a flashy advertisement that focuses on Gaming Power and Quality. Very few prioritize their accessibility features (such as low price or low minimum requirements). Ironically the machines required to connect to many Cloud Gaming Services could be gaming machines all on their own. Parsec’s data tells us that Gamers prioritize price over quality. Do Cloud Gaming providers have it all wrong?
